The Lazy post

Recently, I had a colleague ask for advice on some financial stuff. I talked about how she is being on the right path to FIRE. And she replied:

Inspired by being lazy. The more lazy you are, the more you try to find out how to be lazy

the lazy colleague

We are so used to the notion that being lazy is a bad thing. But the more I thought about it, the more I think being lazy might actually be a good thing. Here’s why.

Work

Being an engineer in Test, I hate repetitive testing. Maybe the hardworking ones will press on and continue. But the lazy ones will find ways to not do the repetitive tasks. They will find ways to automate and optimize the tasks.

I used to care what other people are doing at work. But nowadays, I don’t. It takes too much energy to do that. I am just too lazy for that these days. 🙂 So I just focus on my own goals and priorities. At the end of the day, what matters is what you have accomplished. Not what someone else did or didn’t do.

Exercising

I know this one sounds really weird. Here me out.

I first started out with a habit of choosing a exercise that is easy to do and takes only 5 mins, that a lazy person like me can do it. Once I’ve created the habit of exercising, I increased it by increments of 5 mins.

Today, I exercise 30 mins, at least 5 days a week. And I always try to do it in the morning. Because once this 30 mins exercise is done, I get to be lazy throughout the day.

Savings

When it comes to savings, I don’t think about how much or how to save this month. I simply setup a recurring transfer to another savings account on my pay day. Automating my savings makes sure that I save every month even before I start spending. This stems partly from me being lazy.

Investments

I do both DIY and automated monthly investing. I have to say that at the moment, the automated monthly investment is kicking my DIY investment’s ass.

It takes a lot of time to do DIY investment. Lately, I’ve been thinking maybe I should be more lazy. Stop DIY-ing, pay some fee and just go all passive via Autowealth.

So what do you think? Being lazy isn’t as bad as it sounds. It can be good if it is used in the right ways.
