StepN: Guide to Choosing Your First Pair of NFT Sneakers

TLDR: Choose a sneaker type that reflects on your fitness level. Buy a pair with high base efficiency and resilience attributes. Concentrate on these 2 attributes when you are leveling up your sneakers to maximize your $GST earnings and reduce your sneaker repair cost when you are first starting out.

Now, onto some of the basics.

Sneaker Type

There are four types of sneakers to choose from:

  • Walker (Optimal Speed 1-6km/hr)
  • Jogger (Optimal Speed 4-10km/hr)
  • Runner (Optimal Speed 8-20km/hr)
  • Trainer (Optimal Speed 1-20km/hr)

There are optimal speed of each type. This means that you have to maintain this speed in order to earn $GST.

You can choose a sneaker type depending on your fitness level. If you are just starting out, I would suggest to go with a walker. And with a walker, you can go the distance.

Trainer is of course the best as has a wider range of optimal speed. However a trainer type NFT is also more expensive.

Sneaker Quality

At the moment, you can choose from the following 3 qualities.

  • Common (Base attribute is between 1-10)
  • Uncommon (Base attribute is between 8-18)
  • Rare (Base attribute is between 15-35)

With a Common pair, each time you level up, you get 4 attribute points that you can distribute to your sneaker attributes. An Uncommon pair gets you 6 attribute points for each level up. A Rare gets 8 attribute points for each level up.

If you have cash to splurge, I recommend starting with an uncommon pair.

Sneakers Attributes

  • Efficiency – Determines the amount of $GST earned
  • Luck – Determines the frequency and quality of a Mystery Box drop
  • Comfort – Not in use at the moment
  • Resilience – Determines how much repair cost is needed for your sneakers

You can go to this https://stepn.guide/ to see how you can distribute your attributes to your sneakers. This is a community built calculator that will simulate your $GST earnings or repair cost based on the attributes and level of your sneakers. It is pretty accurate.

Energy

Energy is needed to earn $GST.

1 Energy = 5 mins of earning time.

1 pair of sneaker gives you 2 energy points and 3 pairs of sneakers will give you 4 energy points. For the full chart, refer to the white paper. By the way, 2 pairs of sneakers will only gives you 2 energy points.

Extra energy is given if you own higher quality sneakers. An Uncommon gives you extra 1 energy point, and a Rare gets you 2 extra energy points.

E.g.

  • If you own 1 pair of uncommon sneakers, then you get 3 energy points.
  • If you own 1 pair of common sneakers, you get 2 energy points.
  • if you own 1 pair of uncommon sneakers + 2 pairs of common sneakers, you get 5 energy points.

Gems and Sockets

Each sneaker will have 4 Gem sockets. These sockets can be unlocked at level 5, 10, 15 and 20.

There are four types of Gems representing each attribute:

  1. Yellow: Efficiency
  2. Blue: Luck
  3. Red: Comfort
  4. Purple: Resilience

By inserting a matching gem into the socket, users will be able to boost the sneaker’s base attributes.

For a detailed explanation, refer to the white paper.

How to choose your StepN Sneaker?

  1. Decide on your sneaker type.
  2. Decide on your sneaker quality.
  3. Decide if you want to mint more sneakers. Find a sneaker with 0 mint if you plan on minting more sneakers in the future.
  4. Buy a sneakers with high base attribute for Efficiency and Resilience.

Example 1:

This is a pair of Common Walker sneakers. It has already been upgraded to level 5. It has been minted twice. The base attributes for Efficiency and Resilience is really low. (remember a common base attribute is between 1-10).

It has a Resilience socket. But remember, this sneaker only has a 1.2 base Resilience. A Gem can boost up to 40% the base attribute of the sneaker, in this case, 1.2 x 40% is just 0.48 points. It’s not worth to boost it with a gem. If the resilience is at 10, then 10 x 40% is 4 points, in this case, it’s definitely better.

So now you know, why it is better to buy sneakers with higher base attributes. If you can, look for sneakers with high base efficiency and resilience attributes. And bonus, if it has efficiency and resilience gem sockets as well.

Example 2:

Now, this one is really good. It has high base efficiency and resilience. And it has 4 efficiency sockets! In my opinion, this is a better choice to buy than example 1. Of course it is going to cost more. Something’s got to give, it’s either it will cost more, or you’ll buy a lower quality one.

Conclusion

I like to think of purchasing these NFT sneakers as gym membership investment. We buy gym membership to go to exercise. But a lot of times, we lacked the discipline and motivation to see it through.

With StepN’s move to earn NFT, it gives you that extra motivation to get up and walk everyday. Even if it’s just 10 mins. In no time, you get better fitness, and you might even earn all your gym membership fee back.

I have been using StepN for 2 weeks. And in these 2 weeks, I’ve clocked 22.38km, and done 5.4 hours of exercise! Is it worth it? That is up for you to decide.

As always, none of this should be should be taken as financial advice.

Bonus

Lately, it’s been difficult to get a activation code. So I will be posting one or more codes every day when I get them. Good luck!

  1. what is green bar in attributes? is they are actual points or while click base it shows actual attribute without green bars, please?

    • The green bar means that the points are already distributed to the attribute.

  2. Hi dude
I need to know the average earning in a day with a runner sneaker at level5.
I mean if I have a jogger sneaker at level 5 then I will earn 5(level) * 5 GST, is that true?
and currently each GST ~ $2.6 so I will earn 5*5*2.6 = $65 per day?

  3. how do you think?! in 2022 December and 2023 January price will be?! Just only your opinion!

    • honestly, with crypto, noone knows. Just look at LUNA, it was $100 a month back and now it’s worthless. When you buy stepn sneakers, you must buy with the mentality that it can all go to zero.

  4. Hi Suz,

Is this pair of sneaker good?
    Efficiency 21.2
    Luck 2.8
    Comfort 2.8
    Resilience 10.5

    Appreciate your feedback. Thanks.

    • Hi, yes that sounds like a good one. What is the level of the shoes?

  5. If I have one walker and one runner can I mix and match activities? For example, can I run one day and walk the next? Could I walk for 5 minutes and run for 5 minutes?

    • Hi Kim,
yes you can switch between using your walker and runner. But do note that, if you plan to level up your sneakers, it is best to choose one pair to concentrate leveling up on. Because leveling up sneakers cost GST, and of course the higher level your sneakers are, the more GST you earn. So you need to decide which activity suits your more, walking or running.

  6. Hello, I am in dilemma to by trainer sneaker for 25 or 50 Solana. If I buy those with 50 Solana cost I will do more earnings than with 25 right? Thank you!
Also I would like to use this opportunity to buy more expensive because of the crypto situation and prices drops.

    • You have to check the 50sol trainers, are they of higher levels than the 25sol ones? And check for the points on efficiency and resilience.

  7. If I purchase a shoe that is already upgraded, what happen?
    1. Do I get it with the upgrade?
2.Do I get to upgrade those same levels as I want?
3.I lost the upgraded levels and can’t use it?

    • yep u do get the shoes with the upgrade. If the points have not been distributed to the attributes, then you can distribute them after you purchase it.

  8. Thank you for this guide. Is it possible to mix and match shoe types? I started with a trainer, but didn’t know if I could get a jogger and then a walker for example and then I would be at 6 energy per day. Secondly, do you know if I mint with two trainers, it should definitely mint another trainer?

  9. Hiw much were the earmings per day? Because you said you “might” get some financial benefit. So did you get any or is it a scam?

    • How much you earn depends on a number of variables, such as your shoe type, level, and how many energy you have. I have already recouped my investment, and i make between $200-$500 per day depending on the GST price. What works for me make not necessarily works for you. As with all crypto, you should do your own research, read the whitepaper and decide if this is for you.

  10. Thank you for the detailed explanation and for activation code. I’ll try to get my first sneaker 👟

  11. I want to know will i be able to earn more if i have two common sneakers? Rather than one I really want to know

    • You need at least 3 pairs of shoes to increase your energy. 2 pairs, your energy is the same as 1 pair

      • I just dont get it, why is it better to buy lets say a common jogger level 5 with good base attributes for example 8E & 6R and level it up while i can just afford to buy a level 9 or 19 even now with these low prices which is already upgraded and have higher attributes for example 40E and 15R?
Plz explain it to me like im 7 years old 🙂

        • Well when I wrote this article, the floor price (FP) of sneakers was at 13Sol (and sol was at $80 range). So it makes sense at that time to level using the GST you earned. But like you mentioned now, the FP has dropped a lot, and sol is at $40 range, so yes you can go ahead and buy a level 9 or 19 or 30 sneakers because it is a lot cheaper now.

    • Hi Suz, from your opinion, should I start with walker or trainer type of shoe?

      • Given the floor price has dropped a lot since, I think it is better to go with trainer. Because you can walk, jog or run with a trainer.
